Rural Farm Tiles

I actually forgot to make a post about this! But my resource pack was finished on March 11, 2014. Exactly a year and one day later after I started working on it. And it started selling on March 20, 2014. I’m so happy to have finally finished it, and I’m really proud of it (as well as the trailer). I actually proposed to not set a high price for it (it could easily have been $45 due to all of the content), because I really want to encourage people to buy it, and not scare them away.

Anyways, Harvest Moon clones please, nao.

Trailer:

Buy it here.

Damnit

I can’t make it a December release for my rural farm tiles. I’m so sad. It’s just so much work, and I keep overestimating myself! I just finished the male sprites, which already took a month, so doing the female sprites will take even longer … which means it’ll be 2014 by then.

Ah well, I guess I’ll be starting the new year with a new tileset then.

Just keeps piling up

Still working on it, but I swear I’ll never get done with the amount I still have left to do …

But at least, here’s a pretty screenshot:

The time system is up and running, changing tints as it nears sunset and so on.

I’ve been working on a bunch of action sprites for the main heroes, but it’s been driving me crazy, so I took a break from it and made a pretty Japanese bridge instead.

And progress is made!

No, I haven’t been slacking off on my farm tiles – I’ve been working on it!

So here’s a quick map to show off some progress:

(it kinda looks like a game already)

The nature tiles are now all 100% done, as well as the custom HUD and time system. Unfortunately, I’m not done, I would say I’m halfway done 😦 it’s a lot of work I’m putting myself through, especially with the custom characterset.

Farm tiles … I think

I’m adding so much stuff to my Farm Tiles pack, I don’t think it’s right to call it a ‘Farm Tiles’ pack anymore.

You could theoretically just opt to buy my tiles instead of Luna’s Modern Tiles if you want to make a modern game, since I’ll have everything the Modern Tiles have, except even more. Of course, it’s a different art style, but it has a lot of content. Specifically it’ll include an all new sprite pack, and people love sprites.

It’ll have a lot of furniture for you to mess around with (I think 3 different furniture styles, plus one recolour. One of those styles is Japanese themed), not to mention the building-specific tiles such as a forge for a blacksmith, desks for a school classroom, or a mannequin for a tailor etc. You could simply create a life sim or dating sim with the pack, and you’d have everything you need (bar actual portraits for the characters).

Anyways, here’s a small sneak peek:

Progress on sprites

So I’ve decided to go ahead with adding sprites to my farm tiles.

And it’s coming along! I’m actually having fun creating outfits and hairstyles for them. Here’s a sneak peek of the different combinations:

And here are the sprites next to some furniture for comparison:

I am definitely happy I decided to scrap my previous crop tiles and basically start over, I’m really enjoying this style a lot more!

Not quite pixelart sprites

After struggling with creating some crops for my farm tiles, I’ve decided to take a break from them (I do not like them at all), and instead work on a sprite base that I’ve been planning to include in the pack.

But since I hate pixelart …

… And I wanted to go for a more painted style …

I’ve decided to go with a harsh pixel outline, but on the inside, still paint everything (so I’m using like a million colours). I draw the outline first, then paint big, and scale it back down – it works wonders.

That’s what I’ve come up with for now. Still tweaking some things of course.

And yes, my inspiration definitely comes from harvest Moon.

Large icons

So one of the special things I’m including for the farm tiles resource pack, is a bunch of large icons ( as well as regular 24x24px icons for RPG Maker use), because I’m more or less aiming my audience at non-RM developers who want to make a farm game. Having large icons for the crops will come in handy for this.

Except I can’t decide on a style. I want the icon to pop out, so a black border would be pretty visible, unless they’re being shown on a dark background. The solution for this would be to have a black and white border, to compensate for both a dark and light background, but this makes the icon look more busy. Then there’s no border at all.

Eh, I’m indecisive.
